Roland Launches Moodymann-Inspired SP-404MKII Sampler

The SP-404MKII KDJ Records Limited Edition is a tribute to the legendary Detroit producer and DJ, Moodymann.

In collaboration with Moodymann and his iconic KDJ Records label, Roland has released a limited-edition version of the SP-404MKII sampler.

This special edition, restricted to just 600 units worldwide, features a custom-designed faceplate with the Moodymann logo and other KDJ Records artwork. It also comes with exclusive samples curated by KDJ Records artists, plus a seven-inch vinyl and mixtape showcasing key tracks from Moodymann’s discography.

Similar to the original SP-404MKII, this version includes 17 RGB velocity-sensitive pads, an OLED display, and onboard FX such as a vinyl simulator, DJFX looper, lo-fi cassette simulator, and resonators. It can be powered via USB-C or six AA batteries, making it perfect for mobile beat-making and performances. The unit also offers 16GB of internal storage, dual headphone outputs for collaboration, and a mic/instrument input for sampling. KDJ Records was founded by Moodymann, whose real name is Kenny Dixon Jr., and remains a defining label in the Detroit music scene.

The SP-404 is a renowned sampler, especially influential in lo-fi hip-hop culture. Roland released an eagerly awaited update to the SP-404 series in October 2021.

You can purchase the SP-404MKII KDJ Records Limited Edition from Roland’s website for $599 — available now.
